Web content & editorial operations

Wizards Play Network retailer content

Content Specialist (Contract) · Wizards of the Coast, WPN content team · November 2025 to present

What I'm working on

The Wizards Play Network is Wizards of the Coast's retailer program, and it's going through a major update. That means the guidance retailers use has to move with the program.

A lot of the problems show up between documents: an article disagrees with the dashboard, an older page still uses outdated wording, or something gets drafted before the underlying decision is settled. I spend a lot of my time catching those issues before they reach retailers.

My role on the team

I own assigned retailer-facing content, including drafting, revision, editorial QA, CMS preparation, and review coordination. I support the content calendar and maintain the article tracker, coordinating timing and dependencies with program managers as pieces move through release cycles. Much of the QA is on material I didn't originate. The calendar itself, program policy, final approvals, and launch strategy sit elsewhere on the team.

Scope

  • 25+Retailer-facing assets created, substantially revised, or QA'd across six formats
  • 90+Editorial QA and cross-document consistency passes across about 30 connected assets
  • 16Pieces prepared as Contentful-ready markup with final consistency checks
  • 10Asset education suite: five written explainers, five instructional video scripts
  • 6Article guidance series led end to end, standardizing voice, structure, and terminology

Public samples

These are live WPN articles I created, substantially revised, or supported through editorial QA and publishing preparation. WPN content is a team effort, and these pages reflect contributions from more than one person. Program specifics beyond what's already published stay confidential.

How a piece actually comes together

Briefs come from program managers. I gather the source material and partner input, pin down the retailer question the piece needs to answer, and clarify anything that's still unsettled before I draft.

I write and revise web articles, FAQs, segmented emails, instructional scripts, interface copy, and partner materials. I also review connected content as a set, checking terminology, program details, dashboard behavior, and older guidance that may have gone stale.

Published content keeps moving too. When program details change, I go back through the related pieces and update them together so the guidance stays consistent across the set.

Unresolved questions stay on a cross-functional decision tracker until there's an answer. That keeps uncertain program information out of retailer-facing copy and makes ownership visible while the team works through it.

The piece I'd point to first is a coordinated education suite: five written explainers paired with five instructional video scripts and detailed visual direction, with the written and video treatment of each subject developed together.

I also led editorial development and consistency review for a complete six-article guidance series, standardizing voice, structure, terminology, and calls to action across all six.

Tools and handoffs

Briefs and tracking live in Smartsheet and Confluence. I draft in Word and stage in Contentful, handling formatting, metadata, link QA, and localization preparation. I coordinate stakeholder review, manage follow-ups, and route material changes for legal review when needed.

I also use AI for synthesis: digesting meetings, comparing source documents, and surfacing inconsistencies across a group of articles. Anything it surfaces gets checked against current documentation before I act on it.

Fiction editing for Vinspire Publishing

Contracted editor · Vinspire Publishing · September 2019 to April 2021

How the work was set up

I edited five titles for Vinspire Publishing from 2019 to 2021 as a contracted editor paid on royalties. The work followed the publisher's house process, and in one case meant coming back to the same author for a second book.

How the rounds worked

Vinspire called the first round a content edit. It covered grammar and style, sentence structure, paragraphing, dialogue, clarity, plus plot and continuity queries.

After the author revised, I reviewed the changes, reread for final corrections, and prepared the clean manuscript for the publisher. The rounds blended sentence-level, style, continuity, and correctness work, so I use Vinspire's own terminology here.

  • Pockets of Promise Laurie Stroup Smith Content edit through final manuscript preparation, with grammar and style work, clarity edits, and plot and continuity queries.
  • The Mystery of the Golden Ball Kimberly Mitchell Content edit through final manuscript preparation, including sentence restructuring, dialogue, paragraphing, and plot and clarity queries.
  • Rebekah's Dress Sara Harris Content edit through final manuscript preparation, with sentence-level editing, continuity and plot queries, and Chicago style work.
  • The Test of Gold Renee Yancy Content edit through final manuscript preparation, including flow, consistency, historical and fact-checking queries, foreign-language styling, and formatting review.
  • Pockets of Purpose Laurie Stroup Smith Second-round editing after another editor's first pass, covering continuity, clarity, grammar and style, character and plot, factual queries, and final preparation.

Lydia, The Mythik Wars, Book 2

Eric Messersmith · Melange Books · 2019 · Proofreader

A multi-round proofreading assignment covering a full first pass, author and publisher feedback, a second pass, and final manuscript delivery.

Proofreading at the end of a production cycle is where consistency problems that survived every earlier stage finally have to be caught, because there's no round after yours.

Also in this period

Completed editorial evaluation and cold reads of commercial fiction for publishing clients, reviewing manuscripts for accuracy, consistency, continuity, and publication issues. Individual title assignments aren't named here.

Editing practicum with May McGoldrick

University of Washington Certificate in Editing · June to August 2019

What it was

The capstone of my University of Washington Certificate in Editing was a practicum with working authors. I edited a 3,000-word section of Thanksgiving in Connecticut, a novella by May McGoldrick, the pen name of Nikoo and Jim McGoldrick.

What it included

The assignment included an editorial proposal and schedule, developmental and line editing, author queries, Track Changes and margin comments, a style sheet, a revision round, final cleanup, and delivery. I managed the schedule myself and hit every date.

Why it's here

Most editing work is invisible by design. This is one of the few projects where I have permission to describe the whole process, so it gives a clear picture of how I work with an author.

“Your edits were insightful and on target.”

Nikoo and Jim McGoldrick, writing as May McGoldrick. Shared with permission.

They also praised the clarity of my communication and project management and noted that I met every deadline.

Technical & B2B editing

Engineering reports, legal reports, and training manuals

Editing engineering and legal reports taught me to check facts and contradictions before polishing sentences. I carried that habit into training materials at Mallory, and it still shapes how I review content now.

Report Coordinator, Rimkus

October 2022 to June 2023 · Seattle, WA

Edited technical engineering and legal reports for clarity and consistency while preserving expert meaning. I coordinated revisions across departments and worked directly with subject matter experts to resolve unclear or conflicting information, often with several reports moving at once and none of the deadlines moving.

Client Partnership Representative, Mallory Safety & Supply

August 2023 to February 2025 · Seattle, WA

Developed and edited training manuals, instructional content, and internal documentation. I also translated technical product information for B2B audiences, kept customer-facing and internal materials consistent as details changed, and provided bilingual English and Spanish support.

Those materials are confidential, so I don't show samples from these roles.
